Out and about in Pontcanna
Bute Park is Cardiff’s biggest green area, with several entrances in both Pontcanna and Riverside. Once part of Cardiff Castle’s grounds, the park was gifted to the people of the city in 1947 by the Fifth Marquess of Bute. As well as royal history, the park is home to over 3000 species of trees, woodpeckers, herons, woodland, and wide-open fields. A peaceful spot in the centre of the city, you’ll feel far away from any hustle and bustle here. The River Taff and the Taff trail flow through Bute Park, which you can follow to Brecon if you’re so inclined, or Castell Coch in Tongwynlais, which is far less pedal time. If you’re taking things easier, there are three cafes to choose from within the park walls (we’ll talk about those in Eat).
Nearby, is Llandaff Fields, which sits opposite Pontcanna’s Penhill Road. A huge stretch of green, it has plenty of benches and a path that takes you to Western Avenue, onto Llandaff Cathedral and some of Roald Dahl’s childhood haunts. The fields are popular for picnics, kids football and dog walks. Never far from a cuppa, you’ll find a café here too.
If you fancy a walk or cycle to Cardiff Bay, start at The Holiday Inn in Riverside. Take the Millennium Walk Bridge past the Millennium Stadium, following the river along the Taff Embankment until you reach the Bay. Maybe you’d prefer a run? Grangemoor Park in Grangetown is just a few streets away from the Bay, and hosts Parkrun every Saturday morning at 9am. Though, why run when you could get a boat? There are two water taxi services that will cruise you along the Taff from Bute Park to Cardiff Bay and vice versa.
