Ashley Down sits east of Bishopston, quieter than the Gloucester Road streets and dominated by two sets of buildings. The first is the former Müller orphanages along Ashley Down Road — vast Victorian blocks, now partly college and partly converted apartments. The second is the county ground on Nevil Road, where Gloucestershire have played cricket since the nineteenth century.
Ashley Down railway station opened in September 2024, the first station the area has had in decades, which puts Temple Meads a few minutes away and has changed how people think about living here.
The housing is mostly late-Victorian and Edwardian terraced, similar to Bishopston but on calmer streets, with Horfield Common to the west and the Frome valley below to the east.
