Living in Dinas Powys

Dinas Powys sits between Penarth and Barry, far enough out to feel like a village and close enough that a great many people here work in Cardiff. The station is a large part of why: it is on the Vale of Glamorgan line, which puts Cardiff Central within a short run and Barry in the other direction.

The village has an old core around the Common, with the church and the older cottages, and the housing spreads out from there — interwar and post-war semis and detached houses on the slopes, and later estates beyond them. Woodland and farmland close it in on three sides, which is what stops it running into Penarth and is a good deal of its appeal.

There are shops, a library and pubs in the village itself, so it works without a car in a way that many commuter villages do not.

What sells here

Detached and semi-detached family houses with gardens are the bulk of the market, bought mostly by people moving out from Penarth and Cardiff for more space. Supply is the constraint rather than demand — the village is not growing much, so what comes up tends to sell quickly. The older properties around the Common trade in their own right and rarely come to the market at all.
