Ely was built between the wars as one of the largest planned housing estates in Wales, and it was laid out with more generosity than the era is usually given credit for — wide roads, front gardens and long back plots that are considerably bigger than anything in the Victorian districts closer in.
Trelai Park is the main green space, with the Ely river running along the southern edge and the Caerau hillfort standing on the skyline to the west. The area has its own shopping parades along Cowbridge Road West and Grand Avenue.
It is a straight run into the city along Cowbridge Road, and the A4232 on the western edge connects quickly to the Bay, the M4 and the Vale.
